FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Long Island Board of Realtors Huntington Chapter Provides Support to
Address Hunger on Long Island

May 2008 - West Babylon, NY - Members of the Huntington Chapter of the Long Island Board of Realtors® presented a check for $1,000 to Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Food Bank to support efforts to fight hunger on Long Island.  The donation will be matched by a private foundation as part of The Feinstein Challenge that supported several Long Island based not-for-profit organizations including Long Island Cares during the month of April.

Long Island Cares was founded in 1980 by the late singer/songwriter and activist Harry Chapin in response to the immediate needs of hunger on Long Island, and it is continued today by his wife and partner Sandy Chapin.  In the years since Harry passed, Long Island Cares has become an organized force of caring, dedicated people making a difference in the fight against hunger on Long Island.  The mission of Long Island Cares is to bring together all available resources for the benefit of the hungry on Long Island.  The organization provides emergency food where and when it is needed, sponsors programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency, and educates the public about causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.

Paule Pachter, Executive Director and Robin Amato, Director of Development of Long Island Cares provided LIBOR members with a tour of Long Island’s only food bank, which will distribute more than 6 million pounds of food this year to over 540 community based organizations including food pantries and soup kitchens.  This will feed some of Long Island’s 260,000 hungry children and adults.  “We’re extremely grateful to the Long Island Board of Realtors for their support and willingness to help us in the fight against hunger on Long Island,” said Mr. Pachter.  “It’s very meaningful that the Huntington Chapter has selected to support Long Island Cares since our founder, Harry Chapin was a long time resident of Huntington Village,” Pachter added.

“It is extremely troubling that more than a quarter of a million Long Islanders are either malnourished or go hungry in our communities,” said Peter Demidovich, President, Huntington Chapter, LIBOR.  “Realtors work hard to support our local communities in their charitable efforts and the work of Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Food Bank is especially important in these difficult economic times when so many families are turning to food pantries and community organizations for help,” he continued.  The Huntington Chapter has committed to providing an additional donation to Long Island Cares this summer and will advocate for an increase in state support for the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program, which supports Long Island Cares and their network of member agencies, during their upcoming Lobby event in Albany.
