LIBOR Recognizes National Homeownership Month by Sending Realtors® to New Orleans for Global HFH Project
June 2008
- West Babylon, NY - Realtors® and Realtor® associations
across the country have organized homeownership and community improvement
projects this month in celebration of National Homeownership Month. President
Bush designated June as National Homeownership Month in 2002 to draw
attention to the need to create housing opportunities for all Americans. Owning
a home is the American Dream. Homeownership fosters involvement
in community life as well as participation in democratic institutions.
It also provides important social and economic benefits.
Realtors® are in the business of creatinghomeownership
and housing opportunities. On June 1st the Long Island Board of REALTORS® (LIBOR)
President Mohsen Zandieh, LIBOR Public Relations Chairperson Joe Sinnona
and LIBOR Realtors® Political Action Committee (RPAC) Chairperson
Matthew Arnold joined the New York State Association of REALTORS® (NYSAR)
Global Village Habitat for Humanity (HFH) Project Team, and headed down
to Slidell, Louisiana to participate in a week long HFH build spearheaded
by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR). Slidell is
located approximately 25 miles out of New Orleans. The trip was
co-sponsored by NAR, NYSAR and LIBOR’s “We’re More
Than REALTORS®…” campaign.
This unique housing opportunity project was spearheaded almost a year
ago by the NYSAR Housing Opportunities Committee. Realtors® Steve
and Jacqie Rose served as team leaders for the team and did an unbelievable
job coordinating this effort. A total of 20 New York State Realtors® volunteered
their time, including NYSAR President Linda Page, and helped build several
Habitat for Humanity homes that will eventually be occupied by victims
of Hurricane Katrina.
According to Christina DeFalco, LIBOR’s Communication Specialist,
who made the trip serving in the capacity of volunteer and news correspondent
for the local and state association “The Habitat Global Village program
in Louisiana is nothing short of amazing, many have devoted a year of their
life to come down and live on a stipend income and work with organizations
such as NAR to rebuild homes for those in need. Everyone involved
in this project are truly devoted people, their hard work is inspiring
and the enthusiasm contagious; this has been a life changing experience
for all of us and we are honored as a team to be a part of it.” The
Long Island Board of REALTORS® is committed to assisting those not
only in New York, but across the country, in achieving the American Dream
of becoming homeowners
